How to Stay Ahead of Trends with Pinterest Predicts 2023

This content I’m sharing (beyond my opinion) is directly from Pinterest.

Each year for the past three years, Pinterest has published it’s predictions.  They are shockingly right about 80% of the time.  These predictions are based on user behavior like pins saved, boards created, and overall search activity.

Pinterest coined the term, ‘Before you see it everywhere, see it here.’

It’s true! We know that people use Pinterest to plan for the future. Because of that, Pinterest knows what’s next.  So, this isn’t another year-end trend report. This is a not-yet-trending report.  It’s a window into the future, from the place where people go to plan it ALL!

So let’s take a peek at the future according to Pinterest Predicts 2023.

Data Information

All trends come from global Pinterest search data comparing the analysis period of September 2020 to September 2022. They admit that picking trends is equal parts art and science.

You can see how Pinterest predicted these trends here.  Plus you can find why Pinterest trends matter.

Beauty

Gemini hair

Geminis don’t have to choose—your hair shouldn’t have to either. In 2023, two-toned tresses will take off more than ever. Gen Z and Millennials are behind this rising trend in hair color that mixes natural hues with bright blues, purples, and pinks—“blue and black braids” and “lavender and blonde hair” are on the up. Two is always better than one, just ask the Gemini in your life.

  • Blue and black braids +215%
  • Lavender and blonde hair +150%
  • Pink and lavender hair +345%
  • Brown to pink balayage +280%
  • Multi tone hair color +135%

Behind the trend: All that time in masks got people thinking about ways to express themselves beyond traditional makeup. Non-traditional hair color is an accessible means of self-expression that stands out even when you’re masked up. It’s a mini rebellion against not feeling seen for so long, and it feeds into people’s desire for authenticity.

Crown care

If you want to get a head start on hair care in 2023, go back to your roots. “Skinification,” or a focus on the scalp and crown of your head, will be a priority this year. Searches from Gen X and Boomers show an uptick in care for the scalp, like “scalp treatment” and “clean scalp.” This is your chance at a root revival. Now, who wants a scalp massage?

  • Scalp massage techniques +55%
  • Clean scalp +55%
  • Scalp treatment for dry scalp +70%
  • Natural hair mask for growth +80%
  • Clean scalp build up +45%

Behind the trend: Skincare has dominated the beauty sector in recent years. But with all the global stress that’s impacted us from head to toe, it’s no surprise that scalp care is exploding. This shift has resulted in a slate of new products inspiring people to develop multi-step self-care routines for their scalps.

Micro makeover

From micro manis to barely-there bobs, this year’s beauty looks will be a cut above the rest. Millennials and Gen Z are trading in their long, coffin-shaped nails for mini French manis. They’ll opt for short braids and chopped bangs instead of long, luscious locks. In 2023, small beauty gets its big break. Farewell, so long.

  • Micro french nails +235%
  • Chopped bob haircut +550%
  • Micro bangs +110%
  • Short stiletto nails +80%
  • Short braid hairstyles +45%

Behind the trend: Maximalist beauty had its moment. Now, people are ready for a reset—and nothing says “fresh start” like a fresh crop. After years of coffin nails and almond-shaped extensions, people are realizing that nails don’t have to be long to make a serious statement.

Celebrations

Pool pawties

Dogs diving! Puppers paddling! Barking belly flops! In 2023, pool parties are going to the dogs. We’re talking party invitations, party favors, party decorations—Gen X and Boomers don’t plan to hold back for their next pet pool party. Jump on in, doggo, the water’s fine.

  • DIY dog areas in backyard +490%
  • DIY dog pool +85%
  • Dog birthday party ideas decoration +65%
  • Dog party favors +135%
  • Mini pool ideas +830%

Behind the trend: Gen X and Boomers are turning their attention to their fur babies and substituting kid-oriented gatherings with pet parties. Nowadays, anything and everything is a good reason to celebrate the good boy of the house.

Rust married

So long, something blue. Hues of terracotta, copper, and burnt sienna will be frequent guests at weddings this year. Based on rising searches from Millennials and Gen X, you’ll see this smoldering color everywhere in 2023, from floral arrangements to bridesmaid dresses. And hey, if a big wedding isn’t your thing, you can-elope (sorry).

  • Burnt orange wedding theme +695%
  • Terracotta wedding bridesmaid dresses +230%
  • Orange wedding centerpieces +150%
  • Copper saree +285%
  • Orange dress outfit wedding +285%

Behind the trend: Orange is associated with optimism, adventure, and creativity. As people plan for sentimental moments in their lives—like weddings—it’s no surprise they’re bringing a color with such sentimental significance into the spotlight. Pastels as a wedding staple? We object.

The YOLO years

Sorry kids, Nana’s got plans. In 2023, Boomers and Gen X will plan epic bashes for major milestones, from 100th birthday parties to 50th anniversaries. And Oldbashes are way bigger than bingo—look no further than jubilee cakes and thoughtfully decorated cookies. You know what they’ll say: more years, more reasons to party.

  • 100th birthday party ideas +50%
  • Golden anniversary party +370%
  • 50th anniversary cookies decorated +135%
  • 80th birthday party decorations +85%
  • Silver jubilee cake 25th anniversary +245%

Behind the trend: The pandemic was a difficult time for everyone. Now that restrictions have eased and normalcy has re-emerged, Boomers and Gen X are determined to make the most of the present moment. Celebrations will take on new meaning for this audience in 2023—and they’re the life of the party.

Entertainment

All the raves

Rave culture will reign in the year ahead. As Gen Z and Millennials recover from over two years in lockdown, they’ll take over nightclubs, warehouses and house parties all over the globe. Techno-style, rave fashion, and house music outfits are all trending up.

  • House music outfits +185%
  • Berlin rave fashion +250%
  • Rave party aesthetic +35%
  • Techno style +60%
  • Music mixer +115%

Behind the trend: As pandemic restrictions continue to relax, it’s no surprise that Gen Z and Millennials are reigniting their love for rave culture and its signature aesthetic. People want to find inclusive, freeing spaces where they can let loose and dress however they want.

Fashion

Airy styles

2023 fashion will be filled with lace, tulle, ruffles, and shimmer for everyone based on rising searches from Gen Z and Millennials. “Ruffle shirt for men” and “sheer pants outfit” are just two examples of this tulle-y trend. Time to trade in that moto jacket and your combat boots for ethereal details—no matter how you identify. This year will be a femme for all.

  • Shimmery dress +365%
  • Lace top long sleeve +225%
  • Tulle sleeves +65%
  • Ruffle shirt men +95%
  • Sheer pants outfit +70%

Behind the trend: After two years of sweatpants and loungewear, the focus is now on body-baring silhouettes—a fashion-forward moment of empowerment in turbulent times. Combining ethereal sensuality with the dreamlike quality of ballet, this trend is a gender-agnostic expression of femininity and strength.

Fringe with benefits

Fringe will make a major comeback in 2023—and not in the ways you might expect. Gen X and Millennials will trade in their typical tassels for free-swinging fringed outfits, dresses and jackets. And for the unconventional bride: Fringe wedding dresses are trending up.

  • Fringe dress outfit +255%
  • Tassel jacket +60%
  • Beaded fringe dress +75%
  • Fringe wedding dress +45%
  • Black fringe skirt outfit +155%

Behind the trend: The last few years have felt pretty stagnant, and now it’s time to get moving again. The free-spirited fluidity of fringe helps people feel a sense of ease, levity and flirtatious fun. A natural extension of maximalism, this rising trend is a low-effort, high-impact fashion choice that’s anything but rigid.

Romcom core

Move over, barbiecore—there’s a new main character in fashion. In 2023, Gen Z and Millennials will romanticize their closets with slip dresses, tube tops, cargo pants and claw clips. Get ready for a new kind of meet-cute, inspired by your favorite romantic comedies from the 2000s. For Millennials, this might be a nostalgic trend, but for Gen Z, it’s not-stalgic: Who says that just because you didn’t live through it, you can’t live in it?

  • 2000s girl +235%
  • Cool girl aesthetic outfits +140%
  • Pink mini skirt outfit +145%
  • Rhinestone dress +90%
  • Summer outfits vintage 90s +150%

Behind the trend: Y2K fashion has been trending for a while. Now, people are chasing more than an aesthetic: They want that main character energy that defined the movie industry in the 2000s. That means upgrading everyday moments and making small habits, like trips to the coffee shop, feel like a scene from their favorite romcom. But this time, they’re the star.

Sci-fi fits

2023 fashion will be light-years ahead. Searches for dystopian outfits and futuristic fits will spike as Gen Z and Millennials opt for cyber streetwear, galactic glasses and gamer-girl styles.

  • Dystopian outfits +215%
  • Avant garde outfit +225%
  • Cyber streetwear +70%
  • Gamer girl look +3370%
  • Futuristic glasses +70%

Behind the trend: The interplay between the digital future and cyber aesthetics has led to sci-fi fits. Taking inspiration from dark cinematic fantasies, people are pushing the boundaries of fashion. In direct opposition to last year’s “dopamine dressing” trend, this new style reflects our current times: dark, moody, and dystopian.

Financial Services

Cha-ching challenge

Finance, but make it fun. This year, Gen X and Millennials will seek out new ways to gamify their finances, searching for budget challenges and saving games.

  • 1000 savings challenge +185%
  • Bi-weekly savings challenge +355%
  • Budget challenge +135%
  • Envelope challenge savings +155%
  • 100 envelope challenge +145%

Behind the trend: As global living costs rise, money management is becoming more important across age groups. People are trying to make a tough topic feel rewarding, turning to accessible and entertaining ways to kick-start their savings.

Food and Beverage

Free spirits

Enough with the drinking judgment. Sometimes people want to drink, sometimes they don’t, and sometimes they only want to drink a little—it’s not that complicated. Gen X will drive this trend, demanding mocktails, cocktails, and low-ABV options for all. Now that’s refreshing.

  • Fancy non-alcoholic drinks +220%
  • Mocktail bar +75%
  • Cocktail garnish ideas creative +225%
  • Fancy ice cubes +75%
  • Creative cocktails presentation +555%

Behind the trend: Consumers are embracing a new way of thinking about alcohol. Whether it’s motivated by hangover hatred or a newfound love for tasty, low-ABV options, people are drinking on their own terms. They’ll drink what they want, when they want.

Vitamin seaweed

In 2023, the hottest superfoods will be from the sea. A long-standing staple in Asian cultures, ocean-based foods and minerals are growing in popularity among Millennials and Gen X all over the globe thanks to their much-needed health benefits. Everything from green algae and nori to seaweed snacks is trending up.

  • Benefits of chlorophyll water +35%
  • Green algae +60%
  • Seaweed snacks recipes +245%
  • Nori recipes +60%
  • Salmon bowl +245%

Behind the trend: Long a staple in places like Japan, Korea and the Philippines, these veggies are making their way into the mainstream as more people discover their rich nutrient density. Thanks to the array of health benefits, people will look to the sea for the next family of superfoods.

Wildflours

Green thumbs, get thee a rolling pin. Gen X and Millennials are behind this trend that’s trading bouquets for bouqakes. The apothecary aesthetic comes to the kitchen, with people of all ages tackling ambitious sweet treats like wildflower cupcakes and daisy desserts.

  • Daisy cupcakes +85%
  • Wildflower cupcakes +110%
  • Herbal apothecary aesthetic +1025%
  • Purple floral cake +85%
  • Sage green cupcakes +210%

Behind the trend: We all know someone who caught the baking bug in the past few years. But what was once a basic sourdough has blossomed into a full-blown edible artistic expression. Gen X and Millennial bakers are turning to nature to dress up their floury creations and embracing this bouquet baking trend.

Hobbies and Interests

Date different

Dinner and a movie is so 2022. In the year ahead, Gen Z will embark on a different kind of dating experience, opting for experiential outings like bookstore dates, museum meet cutes and aquarium adventures. Because who needs “dinner and movie” when you have “bookstore and manatee”?

  • Bookstore date +195%
  • Date picnic ideas +385%
  • Creative date night ideas +120%
  • Aquarium date +235%
  • Museum dates +70%

Behind the trend: Gen Z is shaking things up—and we’re not talking about martinis. This younger generation is looking for alternatives to the traditional happy hour meetup. In 2023, get ready for some unique date proposals.

Good on paper

Analog hobbies: so in right now. Paper crafts will make a comeback this year, as Boomers and Gen Z turn to quilling, origami and paper art to satisfy their crafty cravings.

  • How to make paper rings +1725%
  • Origami instructions +175%
  • Paper mache furniture +60%
  • Quilling art +60%
  • Paper animal +385%

Behind the trend: A desire to digitally detox drives this paper art trend. People are looking for ways to switch off and unwind, and they’ve found a therapeutic outlet in the analog. It’s a mindful art form that’s imaginative and inclusive to a mix of ages.

Home

Chance of showers

No bath? No problem. 2023 will be all about the elevated shower routine. Gen X and Boomers will turn rinsing into a ritual in the year ahead, searching for shower bombs and home spa bathrooms.

  • Shower routine aesthetic +460%
  • Amazing showers walk in +395%
  • Shower bomb +90%
  • Home spa bathroom +190%
  • Doorless shower ideas +110%

Behind the trend: Spa-like showers will replace long soaks in the tub thanks to a global push towards water conservation and the need for increased floor space. With Gen X and Boomers looking for more accessible ways to create a spa-like bathroom experience, it’s no wonder ritual rinses are on the rise.

Hipstoric home

In 2023, people will find new ways to honor old stuff in their homes. Got a hand-me-down handy? These searches are helping people combine vintage—often inherited—pieces with their modern styles. Thanks to the Boomers and Gen X driving these trends, antiques have never looked so chic.

  • Eclectic interior design vintage +850%
  • Mixing modern and antique furniture +530%
  • Antique windows repurposed +50%
  • Maximalist decor vintage +350%

Behind the trend: Looking for ways to make their homes uniquely theirs, Boomers and Gen X are rejecting the mass-produced and re-imagining vintage and hand-me-down pieces. The result? Soulful spaces that merge self-expression and historical nostalgia.

Home front

The backyard has had its moment—it’s time to serve the greeter good. In 2023, the front porch will get the spotlight treatment. Rising searches suggest Boomers and Gen X will adorn their entrances with elaborate decor and embellishments.

  • Foyer entryway decor ideas +190%
  • Front door portico +40%
  • Front door transformation +85%
  • Garden front of house entrance +35%
  • Porch for camper +115%

Behind the trend: Even as house prices continue to rise, people will look to add value to their homes in personal and budget-friendly ways. Entryway and porch makeovers may sound small, but they can pack a big punch for people who want welcoming exteriors to match their individualistic interiors. Talk about first impressions.

Mush-rooms

Boring homes, be gone. In 2023, Gen Z and Boomers will make room for weirdcore design, mushroom decor and fantasy art in their sacred spaces.

  • Fantasy mushroom art +170%
  • Vintage mushroom decor +35%
  • Funky house decor +695%
  • Weirdcore bedroom +540%

Behind the trend: During lockdowns, people needed new ways to express themselves creatively without leaving home. So, they turned their bedrooms into creative havens and experimented with aesthetics like “weirdcore decor.” This form of maximalist self-expression will only continue to rise in the year ahead.

Rainscapes

Green living has flourished, but in 2023, people will take water conservation to new heights. And this doesn’t just apply to drought-stricken environments: Boomers and Gen X all over the globe will invest in rainwater harvesting, rain barrels and drought-tolerant landscaping for natural ways to make their homes more sustainable.

Parenting

Beyond blue and pink

Gender norms are shifting—and parenting approaches are, too. Searches among Gen Z and Millennials show a desire to break down the binary as they raise the next generation. From pronoun flashcards and gender flags to self-identity art and unisex names, they’re proudly practicing gender-neutral parenting.

  • Personal pronouns flashcards +80%
  • My self-activities for kids +35%
  • Self-identity art +75%
  • Gender flags +285%

Behind the trend: As we become a more inclusive and accepting society, parents are looking for ways to talk to their kids about gender diversity, self-expression and the use of pronouns. Resources like books, activities and art can help kick-start these conversations, breaking down traditional stereotypes for the next generation.

The fourth trimester

People are increasingly coming to Pinterest for their postpartum needs. Searches from Millennials in particular suggest that, this year, people are seeking ways to support parents during that famous fourth trimester—searching for everything from postpartum meals to gifts and essentials.

  • Postpartum must haves +40%
  • Postpartum basket +135%

So, it’s no surprise that this demo has turned to Pinterest to dive deep into the postpartum period and ease the early days of parenthood. Bringing this life-changing time into focus is a movement we can get behind.

Travel

All aboard

More sustainable travel? That tracks. In 2023, train travel will make a major comeback. Thanks to quicker boarding, extra legroom, scenic views and a lower carbon footprint, Gen Z and Millennials will find a renewed love for this timeless mode of transportation. Searches for Europe interrailing, train quotes and train travel aesthetic are all trending way up.

  • Interrailing europe aesthetic +105%
  • Train trip aesthetic +205%
  • Train travel aesthetic +40%

They’re choosing trains as their primary form of transportation—and boasting about it!—leading to a new term: “train bragging.” As countries add new train routes, introduce sleeper cars and make some journeys free, train travel seems to be just the ticket in 2023.

Primal movement

In 2023, people will trade their screens for stretches and their desks for tricep dips. These primitive, anti-tech workouts invite people to put down their phones and prioritize posture.
